Recording Studio Portraits

Today I shot probably one of my favorite shoots so far this month. I had the opportunity to photograph in a tiny little studio on St Catherine Street in downtown Louisville. Most of the photos were taken in the vocal recording studio. I had my strobe positioned just outside the little window (Check out the photo to the left), pointed down to not be so harsh. All the images were shot a Nikon D600 and color graded through the new Capture One Pro 10. I absolutely love all the new updates to Capture One, it makes my editing more intuitive and powerful.

Voice-Tribune - 21C Hotel Shoot

Monday was my fastest shoot from brainstorming the shoot to delivering the final images. I got a call that morning to shoot a feature the same day and have all the final images delivered before the final deadline Tuesday morning. The concept for our shoot was fun stuff to do around Louisville that was either inexpensive or free. Of course some of the cheapest and most fun things to do have to do with our awesome parks or the Big Four Bridge, however, the sky decided to open up and poor all day. After scrambling around thinking of something we decided on a shoot at 21C Hotel's museum of modern art. I made some more calls and finally found a couple I'm friends with who were free and willing to be photographed last minute for the cover. After a few more calls we got permission last minute to shoot at 5 that day. Here are a couple of my favorite images.

Ben Rickard, Director of Photography

Last Monday I had the pleasure of photographing one of my good friends Ben Rickard. Ben and I went to high school together. We made dumb videos with our friends and now he's making awesome videos for different brands and companies around Lexington and Louisville.

Ben got his start with photography and gradually progressed to video work shooting weddings and now commercial work. For this shoot I wanted to photograph Ben with a cinematic feel with my lighting setup and color grading. I shot with a simple one light setup. We chose to shoot at 1 in the afternoon because that was when the light was the harshest coming in through the window. I used the afternoon sun to backlight Ben and the Phottix Indra 500 through a Phottix Hexa Para 47in soft box as my key light. For the first sitting portraits I also used some Atmosphere Aerosol for some added depth and a cinematic feel. 

Overall I was really pleased with the results from this shoot. See below for some of my favorite shots and a behind-the-scenes gallery at the bottom.

Dork Tattoos

I remember walking by when the people at Dork first bought the little studio on Chestnut street. I was wanting to get a tattoo for my birthday and thought I would give the new parlor a try. Mark Castle was my artist who was very accommodating and made the whole experience great! A couple weeks ago I asked Mark if I could come in and take a few photos of him for my portfolio. I did a couple portraits and a shot of him working on his art pieces and tattoo designs.

Voice-Tribune - Veterans Day Shoot

I was given the opportunity to photograph a local Air Force Veteran, Dave, for the featured article of the latest Voice-Tribune issue. We chose the Veterans Memorial Park in Jeffersontown as it was the most fitting. I arrived early to set up since we only had about 10 minutes to photograph Dave. We didn't time to photograph too many shots and had to fight the harsh midday sun. We walked away with some good photos that hopefully captured the spirit of our military and Veterans day.
