Mike Vance

Last week I had an opportunity to photograph Mike Vance. Mike is a cinematographer based out of Louisville. You can check out his work here. We did three different looks. My setup was pretty simple:

One Phottix Indra500 through a Photek 47in Softlighter v2 (camera right) with a reflector on the left.

Camera Gear:

  • Nikon D600
  • Nikon 50mm
  • Capture One Pro 10
  • Tether Tools Cables

All retouching and color grading for this shoot was done in Capture One. Here were my favorite photos from the session.

Ben Rickard, Director of Photography

Last Monday I had the pleasure of photographing one of my good friends Ben Rickard. Ben and I went to high school together. We made dumb videos with our friends and now he's making awesome videos for different brands and companies around Lexington and Louisville.

Ben got his start with photography and gradually progressed to video work shooting weddings and now commercial work. For this shoot I wanted to photograph Ben with a cinematic feel with my lighting setup and color grading. I shot with a simple one light setup. We chose to shoot at 1 in the afternoon because that was when the light was the harshest coming in through the window. I used the afternoon sun to backlight Ben and the Phottix Indra 500 through a Phottix Hexa Para 47in soft box as my key light. For the first sitting portraits I also used some Atmosphere Aerosol for some added depth and a cinematic feel.

Overall I was really pleased with the results from this shoot. See below for some of my favorite shots and a behind-the-scenes gallery at the bottom.

Gear used for this shoot was:

  • Nikon D600
  • Nikon 35mm
  • Nikon 50mm
  • Phottix Indra 500 + Odin II
  • Phottix Hexa Para 47in Softbox
  • Photek 47in Softlighter v2 (for when the Hexa Para was just way to big and cumbersome)
  • Capture One Pro 9 (RAW processing)
  • Photoshop CC (Color Grade and Retouch)
  • Tether Tools cables
  • Atmosphere Aerosol
